The nation’s media and people in downtown Wilmington were agog Tuesday over something happening at the Gold Ballroom of the Hotel Du Pont.
Everybody seemed to have the same thought: Maybe Joe Biden is announcing his running mate?
“Hi from Wilmington, where secretive preparations are underway for event at Hotel du Pont, a place Biden has frequented throughout his career,” The New York Times national politics reporter Katie Glueck posted late Tuesday morning on Twitter.“It could be for anyone. But we did see vendors the Biden campaign has used.”
Glueck and colleague Thomas Kaplan said the preparations for something involving “soft purple and blue lighting” and large screens began Monday evening and that nobody was confirming anything.
Biden announced his 1972 U.S. Senate race at the hotel, they wrote, and the Gold Ballroom has for decades been the premier place for Delaware’s elite to meet, celebrate and make announcements.
Biden spent this weekend at the family’s summer home in Rehoboth Beach.
The presumptive Democratic Party nominee has let the selection of a running mate drag on, but he is expected to make the announcement before the Democratic National Convention starts Monday.
