Newark police went to a residence on Benny Street last night after receiving a report of a “large gathering.”
Cops came upon a group of 15 to 20 people at 8:15pm, some of whom fled on their arrival.
Officers detained 12 people who remained at the scene – all males – and charged each with violating Newark’s ordinance prohibiting gatherings of more than ten people during the state of emergency. Police say each of the subjects was issued a summons and released at the scene for a court appearance at a later date.
This evening, the University of Delaware confirmed that 9 of the arrested men were UD students who have been referred to the school’s Office of Student Conduct.
Police remind the public that during the state of emergency, gatherings are discouraged and must be maintained at less than 10 people per Governor Carney’s state of emergency order and the City of Newark emergency ordinance.
