State Police arrived on the scene of a crash in Frederica today and encountered a tractor-trailer that overturned, resulting in some of the chickens it was carrying scampering out onto the highway.

A representative at DelDOT said the truck was “loaded” with chickens. Some motorists who drove by the accident reported on social media that several chickens appeared to be pinned under the truck and that a crane was seen lifting the truck from the area.

The crash took place shortly after 1:00 pm on southbound Rte. 1 at the north Frederica exit.  The interchange at Rte. 1 and Exit 86 remains closed.

Police said the driver of the tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries and has been transported to a local area hospital.

Motorists will experience delays in the area and are advised to seek alternate routes of travel. As of 6:30 this evening, the detour is still active.

  • The chickens never moved into the highway…the tractor trailer was not moved by a crane…it was a heavy wrecker tow truck.
