Beautifully painted wings have been showing up across the country and around the world since 2012, when a well-known Los Angeles artist launched her Global Wings Project. However, Delaware has yet to see a pair unfold their bright colors.
That changed this week when the Powder Mill Wings showed up in Greenville, a town not typically known for its street art. Located in the Powder Mill Square Shopping Center on Kennett Pike, these colorful, interactive wings are injecting a spark of creativity just in time for summer.
Local artist and Tower Hill graduate Rebecca (Becca) Pettinaro recently painted her own Angel Wings mural, which took over 30 hours to accomplish. Becca is a junior at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where she is studying musical theater and scenic design.
“When I first saw a pair of Angel Wings, it motivated me to create a mural for my hometown. I hope the mural will have a positive impact on people who come and have their picture taken here and be inspired,” she said.
Artist Colette Miller launched the Global Wings Project in the streets of Los Angeles, which is known as the “City of Angels.” The murals were ‘painted to remind humanity that we are the angels of the earth.’ On her wings website, the artist says, “The first pair was just street art. But the response was natural, immediate, and spontaneous… from people of all sorts and backgrounds.”
The wings have showed up globally in Kenya, Australia, Taiwan, France, Cuba, Juarez and beyond. Other angel wings murals have followed, painted by various artists, in Nashville, Memphis, Washington DC, and other cities.
Powder Mill shoppers will notice the wings just as they enter the parking lot. The mural graces the wall of the red brick building which houses Starbucks and Blythe Boutique.
