Last November’s partisan faceoff at the ballot box may have not looked very tight, but the landscape was much more competitive between Republicans and Democrats at the recent 14th annual Easterseals/CAI Volleyball Challenge. The good-natured showdown on the courts featured the state’s top politicians from both sides, taking place over three days at William Penn High School and raising more than $200,000 for Easterseals Delaware.
Rep. Val Longhurst led the Dems, with notable teammates including Sen. Tom Carper and Governor John Carney. But Republicans squeaked by with a win again this year, with Rep. Michael Ramone and Kevin Hensley leading the charge. Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester chose to demonstrate her athletic skills in a different way…using a weighted hula hoop!
While the Republicans won on the court, the Dems are in the lead for fundraising, which continues online.
The annual tournament raises funds to help Easterseals provide services for children and adults with disabilities in the region. CAI, Inc. was the Title Sponsor for the 14th year. Founding Sponsor Canada Dry was on board once again. Since 2001, more than $5 million has been raised. One special treat this year was a special limited edition “Spiker IPA” brewed by Iron Hill Brewery (for every pint sold, $1 went back to Easterseals).
Delmarva Power (Delmarva Connect) came up with their second win in the annual Corporate Challenge, playing against UniqueImage, Capital One and JP Morgan Chase & Co.
