A new report based on reviews of nearly 5,000 diners on the OpenTable reservation website includes some familiar names at the top of their list of “Diner’s Choice Best Overall Restaurants.”
The top-ten most favorably rated New Castle County eateries features perennial foodie favorites such as Hockessin’s House of William and Merry, downtown Wilmington’s La Fia and Union Street’s longtime go-to spot, Eclipse Bistro. Perhaps not as expected was the appearance of Vita Nova Restaurant, the University of Delaware’s student-operated restaurant, and the Nordstrom Grill at Christiana Mall.
In announcing their list, the reservation service declared that the restaurants are “over-the-top delicious and welcoming every time.”
The all-star lineup was assembled from OpenTable’s most recent analysis of diner reviews across categories including Best Food, Best Value, Best Ambience and Best Service.
Local gourmands won’t be surprised by most of these entries but it should be said that OpenTable’s ratings reflect other factors beyond diner ratings alone. The website concedes that “a number of factors,” go into the rankings, “including table availability, restaurant location, search criteria, and restaurant reviews and ratings.” And there is this: “In addition, payment made by a restaurant to OpenTable is also a factor for the relative ordering of restaurants.”
One notable exception to the list is James Beard “Best New Restaurant” nominee Bardea, the 2018 Market Street arrival that has wowed local restaurant goers since its opening.
All of which is to say these are solid choices for a delicious supper on the town, but they aren’t necessarily ranked in an order you could take to the bank.
