The fast-casual Middle Eastern restaurant Naf Naf Grill opened last week with an offer of free pita sandwiches or bowls to new guests — the Facebook event garnered almost three thousand interested fans. Hungry diners lined the queue as well as the sidewalk to get their taste of the new restaurant.
The smell of chicken shawarma roasting on an open flame immediately greets you at the door. Bread makers toss fresh pita dough as they greet guests at the beginning of the line.
Everything is cooked in view as you progress down the line where an attendant adds your selections as you go. The service is friendly and welcoming and all though there was a long line, it moved very quickly. The décor is simple and clean with a primarily white design and bright tangerine accents.
Naf Naf’s menu offers pita sandwiches and bowls, with an array of bases and proteins including basmati rice, salad, couscous, chicken, falafel and steak. All bowls also include a fresh, house-made pita on the side. An entrée sized chicken kabob platter is also an option with rice, falafel and sides. Imaginative toppings include sumac marinated onions, tomato and cucumber salad, citrus marinated cabbage, Middle Eastern spiced pickles and five sauces – tahini, garlic, spicy jalapeno, harissa and amba, a tangy pickled mango curry sauce. House-made hummus and baba ghanoush are offered as upgrades for an additional charge. Add-ons include fountain drinks, lentil soup, fresh cut fries and baklava for dessert.
We chose the chicken shawarma salad bowl with chopped salad, sumac onions, Naf pickles and the garlic sauce. Each bite was packed with dynamic, unique flavor. Our favorite part of the meal was by far the warm pita. The “cloud-like circles of yum” are incredibly fresh and tender. The pickles are also delightful and unlike any pickle we’ve ever had.
Naf Naf, or “fan the flame,” is a restaurant operated in the spirit of Middle Eastern hospitality – the expression typically intended to gather friends and family to share a meal. Naf Naf Grill got its start in 2009 in Chicago – the restaurant also has locations in Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Washington, D.C.
Naf Naf is located off Churchman’s Road in Stanton, across the highway from Delaware Tech Stanton/George campus, adjacent to Chipotle.
