Alert: Don’t run these red lights in Wilmington!

Red light safety camerasForty-four cameras at 42 intersections in the City of Wilmington will be keeping an eye on you in 2019.

The city released the locations of the red light safety cameras, which are designed to deter motorists from speeding through stoplights — possibly causing serious injury or death.  The cameras’ snapshots of light-runners license plates make for an easy job of ticketing, as improved safety data at several locations attest.

According to state law, the city works with DelDOT to review a slate of camera locations based on crash information from DelDOT and the Wilmington Police Department (WPD).

Wilmington’s total safety cameras for 2019 will include 28 existing cameras whose location will not change; cameras at six intersections that will be eliminated while 16 new cameras will be added. The city estimates that the installation of the 16 new cameras will take from between four to six months to complete through a phased rollout, with the first cameras expected to be online in June 2019. The WPD is also responsible for reviewing all violations before a ticket is issued.

AAA Mid-Atlantic takes the position of a motorists’ advocate. Government Affairs rep Cathy Rossi says the association is encouraged by the latest improvements the City of Wilmington has announced. AAA Mid-Atlantic worked with the city, DelDOT, and the Delaware General Assembly to change red-light policies to better align with best practices nationally. Their goals included:

  • establishing a more fair ticketing review process
  • paying the vendor a flat fee rather than “per citation”
  • redirecting red-light cameras to key intersections deemed dangerous on crash data from DelDOT
