TSD: Delaware’s best take on events, community and local life

When Winterthur Estate opens its doors to welcome hundreds of holiday shoppers ‘after hours’ on Thursday evening, October 25th, it will mark a milestone that is unique to Delaware. On that evening, the Christmas Shop Foundation will kick off its signature event, The Perfect Gift, celebrating the 98th anniversary of a gift show with a rich heritage of giving … and shopping.

The Perfect Gift is the longest-running charitable gift show if its kind in the country.  And since 2000, The Christmas Shop Foundation has donated more than $1,000,000 to 130 charitable organizations in Delaware.

The event’s roots go back to 1920, where Wilmington’s DuPont Building served as The Perfect Gift’s first venue.  In those days, women in hats and gloves would browse the collection of shops with handbags dangling on their wrists.

Through the years, the charitable gift show has evolved and changed, keeping up with the times and refining its relevancy.  The event has changed its location (operating variously at the DuPont Country Club, the ballroom at Hotel du Pont, and Arsht Hall, to name two recent spots), size, even its name. (Once known as The Christmas Shop, in 2003 volunteers adopted its current moniker, The Perfect Gift). But the purpose of the Foundation has not changed.

One hundred years later from its debut, women of the Brandywine Valley have carried on the tradition of ‘shopping for a purpose.’

This year, The Perfect Gift will showcase 40 exhibitors – from jewelry and food, to home décor, women’s apparel, and gifts for kids and men – from around the country. And part of every dollar spent by shoppers will provide support to many deserving local non-profits and hope to the individuals they serve.

Shoppers are invited to come and explore The Perfect Gift at the Winterthur Visitors Pavilion on Fri., Oct. 26th from 9:30 am to 7 pm and Sat., Oct. 27th from 9:30 to 4:30 pm.

The Opening Night party on Thursday, October 25th will include beverages, bites and beautiful things to buy. And 20% of every purchase goes to Delaware nonprofits.  www.christmasshopfoundation.org
