Route 141 Traffic Update: New Phase of Work to Shift Traffic Pattern, Kennett Pike Ramps Reopen

Route 141 southbound lanes (in red) will be closed from Route 48/Lancaster Pike to Route 100/Montchanin Road beginning June 29

The next phase of work on the massive Route 141/Centre Road overhaul will begin tomorrow, Friday June 29, with a major shift of traffic onto the newly reconstructed northbound lanes of the highway.

Beginning Friday, traffic will be shifted into a new contraflow pattern on the roadway allowing one lane of southbound traffic and one lane of northbound traffic.  DelDOT says this will allow for the complete closure of the southbound Rte. 141 lanes from Rte. 48/Lancaster Pike to Rte. 100/Montchanin Rd (remember, this is Delaware, and all roads are referred to both by a number and a name, often multiple names depending where you are).

There is some small good news for drivers: Ramps from northbound Route 141 to Route 52/Kennett Pike north and south will reopen. The traffic shift is expected to take place in the 8:00pm hour Friday evening.

Traffic will shift to the new northbound lanes of Route 141/Centre Road on June 29

As TSD has previously reported, the $17 million project, which began in October 2017, is replacing the existing concrete roadway on this 1.4 mile section of Route 141 and on the Route52/Kennett Pike interchange ramps, as well as replace concrete curbing, drainage, and guardrails. The work on Route 141 south is expected to be completed in November 2018 with two lanes of traffic restored for both northbound and southbound traffic.

Smaller side roads throughout the affected area have been besieged by heavy traffic since the work commenced, with motorists now regularly experiencing significant backups on usually quite lanes such as Centerville and Montchanin Roads.

DelDOT predicts delays will be similar along Rte 141 to what motorists are experiencing in the current phase of the project and the agency is strongly recommending that motorists continue to use alternate routes as major delays will persist into November 2018.

The ramp from Rte 141 southbound to Route 52/Kennett Pike north as well as the ramps from Rte 52/Kennett Pike north and south to Route 141 southbound will be closed for the duration of work to reconstruct the southbound lanes of the road.  In addition, a section of Barley Mill Road at 141 will be closed.  Detour routes will be posted.

During the closures of the Route 52/Kennett Pike ramps located on the southbound side of Route 141 traffic will be detoured onto Route 100/Montchanin Road. During the closure of Barley Mill Road at Route 141 traffic will be detoured onto Lancaster Pike and Centerville Road.

Motorists may adjust their routes or travel times by using DelDOT’ s Smartphone application. The DelDOT App is available for Apple & Android smartphones and tablets, and can be downloaded free, search for “DelDOT” at the Apple and Google Play stores. With the DelDOT App, you can view real-time traffic cameras, travel times, delays, advisories, DART’s Real-Time Transit Information, and also listen to WTMC 1380 AM.
