New Features – and Dry Skies for Once! – Make for Flower Market Success

The thousands of festival-goers who came out for one of Wilmington’s favorite rites of spring would have certainly noticed some big changes at this year’s Wilmington Flower Market.  Of course, the famously wet May weather is always a big variable, but this year the skies never opened up during fair hours on the fairgrounds.

Yet it was other improvements – like extra seating areas, a new layout so most people throughout the market could view the mainstage, lots of new food trucks well positioned on either side of a beer garden –  attracted people to stay longer at the event, with more time to shop (and support good local causes). For the first time in decades, the market sold out virtually all of their plants and flowers. On the final day, the bright red plant racks were empty –hours before the show’s closing.

“I’ve been in plants for 30 years, and we’ve never sold out. It’s pretty exciting that we sold almost everything,” said 2018 General Chair Tracy Ignatieff, who confirmed that they ordered the same amount of plants and flowers this year that they always do just in time for Mother’s Day.

Flower Market offers activities for the entire family, including rides, games, concerts, craft, clothing and food vendors – all against the backdrop of the iconic tower at Rockford Park. “There’s really something for everyone, and that’s why I think we continue to be successful year after year,” said Ignatieff.

The Wilmington Flower Market is the culmination of a year’s worth of planning by a team of dedicated volunteers, many of whom have pitched in for 10, 20 and 30 years. All proceeds benefit a variety of non-profit programs that support children. Last year the Wilmington Flower Market provided grants to more than 50 child-related programs in Wilmington.
