Native Delawarean Katherine Hughes has been doing some exciting theatrical work since TSD first interviewed her in 2012, when she auditioned for Radio Disney’s ‘Next Big Thing.’ Since then, Hughes has turned her focus to acting (in films and on television) and has already worked with some of the entertainment industry’s biggest names, including Adam Sandler and Nick Jonas.
Hughes, 23, has deep family ties in Delaware – she was born here and briefly attended Tower Hill School, before moving to Florida and then back to Chadds Ford, PA – and still visits Wilmington to see cousins in the area. After one year at Unionville High School she relocated to New York to pursue acting while completing school. She moved to Los Angeles shortly after the Disney competition, and she’s hoping “2018 brings (her) more amazing jobs in the industry!”
Performing alongside Timothée Chalamet (2018 Best Actor nominee), Jennifer Garner and Adam Sandler in 2014’s Men, Women & Children was a dream come true for Hughes. “One of my all-time favorite films is Punch-Drunk Love, so it was really special getting to watch Adam Sandler work. He always made it a point to spend time with the younger actors.”
In 2015 Hughes played a supporting role in major motion picture, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, which won two awards at the Sundance Film Festival that year. That picture also starred Olivia Cooke and RJ Cyler of “Friday Night Lights.”
Hughes also worked in 2017 alongside Nick Jonas on the set of Kingdom, the Audience Network’s flagship drama about a family of MMA (mixed martial arts) fighters. Hughes participated in several episodes of the final season of the DirectTV program.
“Nick Jonas was incredible on Kingdom. It was a dark series, and he was so dedicated to his role and show. I also would be lying if I said it wasn’t very cool getting to work with your 7th-grade crush!”Limited viewership options for Kingdom ultimately forced the 3-season show off the air.
But Hughes quickly landed another plum role – her most important yet – as the lead in a hot new series called “My Dead Ex,” which began airing this month on AwesomenessTV.
This is the first major role for this disciplined actor who has worked hard to build a career in an industry many find difficult to break into. Already audiences seem to love the story and the chemistry between its stars. Teens and young adults have already tuned in, with many binging — watching all episodes at once. My Dead Ex centers around Charley, played by Hughes, who is a natural at playing the part of a typical teenage girl living a normal life, except for the fact that Ben, Charley’s not-so-secret admirer, isn’t living at all. But a little thing like death can’t stop these two teens from falling in love.
Hughes was excited to land the leading role in a new teen comedy production. “I had auditioned for several AwesomenessTV projects the past few years, and the role of Charley just clicked! This is my first time working on something comedic, so it has been exciting heading to work every day.”
