A news report late Thursday evening in POLITICO says Vice President Joe Biden is Hillary Clinton’s first choice to be Secretary of State should she be elected president.
Curiously, according to the report the vice president has not been consulted and Clinton’s transition team is “strategizing about how to make the approach.”
The unusual positioning and timing of leak has one local political insider suggesting it is a strategic carrot “dangled to keep him working hard for her” through the November 8 election. Biden has been an enthusiastic and tireless surrogate for the former Secretary of State throughout this heated presidential campaign.
Prior to his election as vice president, Biden chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and he is viewed as one of President Obama’s top advisors on foreign policy. Ironically, going into the 2012 election, aides to President Obama reportedly conducted polling on the merits of a job swap between Hillary Clinton and Biden.
According to the Politico report, many foreign policy establishment names have been circulated in Democratic circles as top diplomats in a Hillary Clinton administration, “but none of those picks would come with the star power that’s been a feature for all recent picks for the job, and which Biden would bring in buckets.”
