screen-shot-2016-09-20-at-2-44-54-pmA coordinated, multi-agency raid netted the arrests of 180 underage drinkers in Newark on Saturday afternoon, a deployment of law enforcement resources that has led to some local head scratching and garnered international attention thanks to a posting of a Delawareonline.com article on the Drudge Report. The site reports nearly 39 million visits in the last 24 hours.

With a crisis of crime up the road in Wilmington and many municipalities across the country decriminalizing marijuana, some commentators are asking if the extensive planning and personnel involved in the bust of an off-campus fraternity party might have been a little excessive. Agencies involved in the raid include the Newark Police, Delaware State Police, Middletown Police, the University of Delaware Police and the Delaware Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement agency.

Of 200 attending the party at the unsanctioned fraternity APES at 302 E. Park Place, 180 were charged with underage drinking
