The popular votes for Delaware’s best burger were so close that judges had to triple count them! Inching out the others for the top People’s Choice award was Wilmington’s Chelsea Tavern, with a Hereford Beef burger combined with smoked chorizo, and topped with a red onion jam, applewood bacon and pepper jack cheese on a mini brioche bun. And Burger Battle newcomer Nordstrom Grill (at Christiana Mall) won the coveted 1st place Critics Choice trophy.

Fifteen restaurants participated in the 2016 Delaware Burger Battle on August 27th on the grounds of Cauffiel House, and each of the 800 visitors were given only 3 tickets to drop in the ballot box of their favorite burger(s). Veteran Burger Battle attendees don’t remember a year with tougher competition. Rosemarie DiGiovanni remarked, “The burgers were all delicious. It was hard to pick a favorite.”

Burger Battle Founder JulieAnne Cross was of course grateful to all of her restaurant participants. She gave a shout-out to a few: Greg Vogeley of The Brunch Box ~ Congeniality; 8th & Union Kitchen ~ the Founder’s Choice award; Firebirds ~ Most Promising Newcomer; and Chef Dan Butler of Piccolina Toscana received an honorable mention for his “visually stunning and incredible-tasting” burger, which was grilled over applewood chips and served with Gorgonzola slaw, crispy pork belly, a Hotel DuPont brioche and a cornichon garnish.

The Delaware Burger Battle benefits the Ministry of Caring’s Emmanuel Dining Room, which helps feed Delaware’s hungry.
