Summer kicked off for some 1,000 Wilmington area kids with a fun-filled day of activities on May 14th at the Brandywine Elementary Fitness Festival. Students had their pick of just about any summer sport they could have imagined, with Bump ‘N Play bubble soccer, hoola hoop contests, rock climbing, bungee jumper trampoline fun, lacrosse, zumba, karate, dance, baseball, tennis, golf, Philly Union soccer, face painting and more.
And the entire day was free!
The fourth annual Fitness Festival was the brain child of Matt Farina, a physical fitness teacher at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School, who thought a free fitness festival might be a great way to introduce kids to new activities and sports. Matt and colleague Alexis Andrianopolous coordinated the entire effort, which included lining up volunteers, give-aways, dozens of sponsors, and publicizing the event. Several summer sports organizations, such as the Wilmington Blue Rocks and Rodney Street Tennis & Tutoring Association, registered new campers at the event. “The day could not be possible without the organizations who participated and interacted with the children,” said Matt. “It’s all about the kids being active and having fun with physical fitness.”
