Town Square Delaware readers have spoken– and in a big way! We asked you to let us know of your favorite Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives spots in Delaware, and 3,086 votes later, you’ve sung the praises of 145 Delaware eateries ranging from pizza parlors to classic breakfast joints to the kind of treasured Delmarva hideaways that you wouldn’t necessarily choose for a first date.
The grand winner? … The Wood Fired Pizza Shop in Newark, which received 17 percent of the vote– as a write-in! Those are some major-league fans! One pollster was a particular devotee of the restaurant’s ghost pepper cheese. (Hello, Flavortown!) In a close second place was perennial Union Street favorite Mrs. Robino’s in Wilmington, with 15 percent of the vote.
Write-ins came from every corner of the state, from Smyrna (Helen’s Famous Sausage House) to Milton (Po’ Boys Creole & Fresh Catch) to Georgetown (Fat Daddy’s BBQ & Grille) to Dewey Beach (Woody’s Bar & Grill). We gleaned a few tips from write-ins, too. One person claimed the best fish tacos in Delaware are at The Pickled Pig Pub in Rehoboth. Another took matters to a global level and said Zogg’s Raw Bar and Grill, also in Rehoboth, has the “best rum punch in the world.” Casa Amici in Lewes, which won a spot in the top 20 restaurants of the poll (No. 18) got a shout-out for its takeout and pizza (“their menu ROCKS”). A crab connoisseur voted for Captain Mac’s Fish House & Seafood Market in Selbyville.
The poll also uncovered a sweet surprise: People who enjoy lunches at the Newark Senior Center cast a few votes for the place. While it’s not exactly a restaurant, one pollster wrote that “the chef makes wonderful meals every day.” We are glad to hear it!
Our next step, with your help, is to share these impressive results with Guy Fieri and his #DDD crew at the Food Network to entice them to see firsthand the First State’s gastronomic wonders. So we’ll be doing just that by email, phone, U.S. mail… whatever it takes. Meanwhile, you can help make it happen by tweeting at @FoodNetwork, @guyfieri and using the hashtag #DDD with a link to this post. That sauce is money!
