If you happened to be heading down Kennett Pike on Saturday and glanced over at the Goodstay Center fields you were in for a treat: a 19th century baseball match between the Diamond State and Mohican Base Ball Clubs. No gloves, no helmets, no fancy gear for these gentlemen of baseball. These amateur enthusiasts are proud to preserve the earliest days of America’s national pastime, playing by the rules from 1860’s, wearing wool uniforms, pitching a slightly larger and softer ball and hitting with a longer wooden bat.

This happens to be the 150th anniversary of the Diamond State Base Ball Club, which played in Wilmington from 1865 through the 1870’s. On Saturday, October 10th, Diamond State BBC will close out their 2015 season with a special Sesquicentennial exhibition game against the Athletic Base Ball Club of Philadelphia at 1 pm at Rockford Park. The public will be invited to participate in the game with players from the two ball clubs. And between now and then, there are a few more opportunities to see these local boys of summer. Schedule here.
