Even as they ran in Saturday’s Riverfront 5K, several young girls mustered the energy to cheer about their love of the Girls on the Run experience. Chanting “Girls on the Run is so much fun,” several groups of lower and middle schoolers giggled and jogged side by side with friends and “buddies” in Delaware’s biggest — and happiest — 5K race! This year some 2,300 adults and kids participated in the Wilmington event, and nearly 1,000 in Dover on Sunday. Donning pink and green t-shirts, tutus, hair ribbons and socks, the spirited 3rd through 5th graders enjoyed the run they had been practicing for all season after school. After the race kids gathered for a rockin’ festival filled with music, dancing, photo booths and vendors. A record 64 Wilmington schools and after school programs participated in Girls on the Run this season.
