Polar bears in Rehoboth Beach got their wish this past weekend, as Mother Nature dumped an inch of snow just in time for one of the largest fundraisers in the state — the Lewes Polar Bear Plunge. Special Olympics of Delaware raised $650,000 throughout the weekend of activities, which culminated with 3,500 plunging into the Atlantic on Sunday. Teams of high school students, businesses, families, even veteran bears who hop from state to state to participate in the plunge sprinted into the bone-chilling 38-degree ocean — nearly 10 degrees colder than last year’s. Several teams went to great lengths to dress in costume and show their spirit as they defied the below-freezing temperatures outside.
