The location was new, but the smell of popcorn was unmistakeable as the Wilmington Riverfront welcomed its newest resident – Penn Cinema on Thursday. The downtown Wilmington movie theater offers six screens, IMAX versions of new releases and plenty of parking to city residents who until now had to travel to take in the latest blockbuster. City dignitaries were joined by representatives from local businesses and nonprofits, along with city residents and visitors, to open the theater. The first official show was Thursday’s midnight showing of “The Hobbit,” but six previously-released movies were shown during a test run following the ribbon-cutting, with proceeds benefitting the Delaware Children’s Museum and the Delaware Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
