Most of the girls on a recent Kalmar Nyckel sail had never been on a boat. And a few had never even been to a beach. Thanks to the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, students from the Delaware Adolescent Program, a statewide, school-based program for pregnant and parenting teens, had the opportunity to spend time on the Christina River, learning about the history of Delaware’s Tall Ship and what life was like on the high seas in the 17th century. As the ship docked, the students were treated to a special presentation from Captain Lauren Morgens, who, as a young female captain in a predominately male field, inspired the students with her story and “can-do” attitude.
