Several hundred garden-goers enjoyed fantastic weather on Thursday night June 2 at the Fourth Annual Jasper Crane Rose Garden fundraiser to benefit the Friends of Wilmington Parks. This year’s event honored beloved local community leader and horticulturalist Alberta “Bert” Melloy, who passed away last year.
“Bert would have loved seeing so many people come together to support this great organization,” said Joseph Melloy, Sr., Development Director for the “Friends” and Bert’s husband. “It was a perfectly beautiful evening for a perfectly beautiful person.”
Joe Melloy was joined at the event by all of his six children who came from distances as far as Madison, Wisconsin. Other parks enthusiasts included local artist Mary Page Evans and her husband, former Congressman Tom.
The setting for the special evening was the Jasper Crane Rose Garden on the Brandywine River in Wilmington, which was completely rebuilt and replanted by the Friends of Wilmington Parks beginning in 2000.
Ross for Dogcatcher?
Apparently the flapping tongue-in-cheek man-bites-dog humor from the recent surprise party for former GOP state chair Tom Ross made it out of Gallucios and onto the bumper of at least one car on the Wilmington streets.
