The Heat of the Battle at Ace for a Cure

The heat didn’t keep these players off the court! Sixty tennis enthusiasts played the game in 95+ degrees on Tuesday at the 4th annual Ace of a Cure type 1 tennis fundraiser at the beautiful Wilmington Country Club.

JDRF volunteers stayed busy handing out ice-cold towels and drinks and spritzing everyone with water — all while hitting tennis balls to raise money for JDRF.

Among the participants were five type 1 diabetics who not only live with this disease but are also very good tennis players.  In fact, each flight was won by a type 1 diabetic and their partner.  Flight A winners were Ryan and Ari Chompre; Flight B winners were Ella Krypel and Jim Zimmerman.

This was year four of a 5-year commitment to raise $125,000 that Linda Rudnick, event chair, is doing to combine her love of tennis with her dedication to raising funds for type 1 diabetes research since her sister has lived with the disease for 58 years.

Linda partnered with Koons Lexus of Wilmington, Ed McQuillen of Wilmington Country Club, a dedicated committee and fellow sponsors including Sue Wingate, Megan Goeller, Sandy Harman and Faith DuPuis to make this commitment an overwhelming success.

Mark your calendars for next June for the final Wilmington Ace for a Cure event!
