Kids Try New Sports, Meet Phillie Phanatic at Fitness Festival

Kids went crazy at the chance to pose with the furry green Phillie Phanatic and Philadelphia Eagles running back Wendell Smallwood on Saturday at the fifth annual Brandywine School District Fitness Festival at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School. With 30 stations of activities and games, the day was all about sports, and the Phillies mascot and the local hometown hero (Smallwood) were great additions to a free day of fun.

Event organizer and physical education teacher Matthew Farina said he goal was to have kids try a sport they had never tried before. Some who had never picked up a tennis racket enjoyed hitting rallies and games at Rodney Street Tennis & Tutoring Association exhibition area. Others tried kick boxing, bump ‘n play, dodgeball and rock climbing for the first time.

Middle schooler Carys Shuert enjoyed the feedback she received at the tennis and volleyball stations and whispered to her mom, “Mom, I think I’m pretty good at volleyball. I might like to do this as a sport.”
