The annual Rodney Street Tennis & Tutoring Association (RSTTA) Spring Benefit featured tennis great Luke Jensen on Friday night. The French Open Doubles Champion (with brother Murphy) shared a humorous story about the run up to his 1993 victory at the French, involving a post-match celebration that went awry, leaving his poor brother Murphy with a broken jaw.
In advance of his visit to Wilmington, TSD interviewed Jensen, who also racked up victories against Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg and Jim Courier.
Nearly 300 Spring Benefit guests enjoyed an evening of cocktails, auction bidding and the chance to meet Jensen under a stunning outdoor tent at the Vicmead Hunt Club. Because the event fell on May 5th, organizers Missy Veghte, Joan Snyder, Becky Allen and Gina Pike planned the event around a Cinco de Mayo theme, and they made hundreds of brightly colored paper flower arrangements which were placed on tables throughout the party. The Mexican-themed food was also delicious.
Proceeds from the event fund a significant portion of the annual RSTTA operating budget for the year. Each kid RSTTA serves is impacted by the event that is put on each spring.
