Powder Mill Square’s newest tenant will bring a familiar smile to many when it opens its doors on Friday, March 31st.
Whimsy, which aims to ‘inspire and delight,’ will replace Apropos, which for twenty-four years graced the retail landscape at Greenville Crossing II shopping center around the corner. Apropos closed its doors on March 3rd, when store owner Deirdre Pettinaro told followers on Facebook that they “can’t wait for the next chapter!”
“We wanted to bring our customers a setting that inspires them even more than we did over at Apropos,” said store manager and creative partner Janet Jornlin. “We are excited to be a part of Powder Mill Square and have received a warm welcome from our neighboring retailers.” Whimsy is conveniently located right next to the Powder Mill Center anchor Brew HaHa!
The new store carries many of the jewelry, invitation, toy and gift lines previously offered at Apropos, and they have added many new lines. The space, which is about twenty-five percent larger than their former location, boasts tall ceilings and a mixture of fresh and contemporary lighting to create an inviting and roomy atmosphere for customers.
The Pettinaro-Jornlin duo designed a special “invitation” stationery room with blush-colored accent walls, a custom table and comfortable chairs. “The room provides a beautiful setting in which to design custom stationery and invitations,” said Jornlin.
The team of friendly sales personnel at Whimsy, many of whom have worked at the former Apropos for 15 or more years, chipped in to ready the store for tomorrow’s opening day by filling the jewelry cases, clothing racks, and greeting cards displays.
Apropos (now Whimsy) was always known for their amazing greeting cards and they have added eight new lines. “If you can’t find a greeting card here to suit your needs, you’re just not going find it!” said Pettinaro.
Whimsy will continue to carry custom favorites for host and home as well as seasonal clothing and accessories.
It’s impossible to miss the beautifully lit jewelry cases that now have their own designated space at Whimsy. “We are carrying a lot of things that are popular right now,” said Jornlin, including chokers, dainty wrap necklaces and dangle earrings and glittery summer baubles. “And we are really excited about a brand new jewelry line called Love, Poppy by two young girls who are very hip,” said Jornlin. They also brought in the Spartina jewelry line and they have expanded the popular John Wind jewelry line.
Two popular lines take front and center in the new children’s area. Jellycat huggable stuffed animals is one of their most sought-after line of toys, which are now showcased in a custom cubby. And they have added a bright red Hape display, a German line of wooden toys that is designed to encourage children to use their own imagination constructed to last generations.
Whimsy is planning special events for their customers, including a grand opening celebration on April 27th.
“We were always known for having a really close connection to our customers. So we can’t wait to share our new home with them!” said Jornlin and Pettinaro.
