Polar Bear Plunge Raises Nearly $1 Million for Special Olympics

These dare devils take the plunge seriously! While most folks are bundled up or headed to the slopes this time of year, the second weekend in February is a busy one in Rehoboth Beach, where thousands take part in the annual Lewes Polar Bear Plunge.

The Plunge is Special Olympics Delaware’s most significant and popular fundraiser of the year.

This year 3,600 Delawareans, including many Special Olympics athletes and their family members, stripped down and dove into the chilly waters of the Atlantic to help raise $900,000 for Special Olympics. For the record, the air temp was 52 degrees and the water 41 degrees.

The Weekend Plunge Festival includes a 5K Run to the Plunge, Pooch Plunge, Chili Contest, Ice Sculpting Demonstration, Polar Ice Cream Throwdown, and of course Sunday’s Polar Bear Plunge. Congrats to the thrill seekers of 2017!
