Girls Inc. of Delaware recently held two events to celebrate the opening of a new facility in Wilmington’s East Side. The non-profit organization, which supports girls in their quest to be “strong, smart and bold,” decided to close their Browntown location and open a smaller but newer facility at 1501 N. Walnut Street to better meet the needs of the underserved girls who attend school or live nearby.
The new location features classroom and activity areas, a computer lab, and one room where “kids can get really messy.” The Walnut Street center will offer a 5-week summer camp, limited after-school programs, and administrative offices for staff. Part of the reason for selecting the new center is because Girls Inc. now plans to expand their outreach programming to reduce the transportation barriers and improve efficiency of their in-school programs. “We now will be able to reach more girls with our S.T.E.M. initiatives and better serve the greater Wilmington community,” said Development and Marketing Manager Laurie Zerumsky.
