Congratulations to the players, coaches and organizations who were honored yesterday at the USTA Middle States Delaware District awards ceremony in Wilmington. More than 40 individuals and groups were recognized for contributions to the sport in the First State, including awards for sportsmanship and the top ranked players in each age group.
The Women’s Tennis Club of New Castle County received the Delaware District’s 2015 Community Tennis Association (CTA) award. In accepting the award, Joan Schneikart remarked, “Over the years, our organization has been an entry point for hundreds of local women to become active in the tennis community as league players, captains, teachers, volunteers and lovers of the game.” The Club not only provides recreational tennis opportunities for adults but has donated funds and provided volunteers for events such as Special Olympics, the Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, Tennis in the Streets, and Rodney Street Tennis & Tutoring Association.
Rodney Street Tennis & Tutoring Association also received special recognition, along with Wilmington Country Club, as a premier provider of tennis programming in the Wilmington community. And USTA Middle States Delaware District President Mark Centrella awarded tennis pro Jim Flesch with a special, first-time Presidential Award for his many achievements, years of volunteerism, and his devotion to the game.
And just who’s the guy on our home page holding all of those awards? That’s Jeremiah DeJose, a teaching pro at Wilmington Country Club who ranked #1 in Men’s Open Singles and Doubles ~ with partner Jeffrey Wiedemann ~ and won the 2015 Under 30 Program Award and accepted the Organization of the Year Award for the large number of charity tennis events WCC hosted last year.
