US Open Player Warms Up in Wilmington

US Open hopeful Alex Lazarov hits with local tennis pro Joel Irwin at Sanford School in Hockessin

TSD is always on the lookout for great local tennis so when we got the call that one of the world’s top junior tennis players was working on his game at Sanford School, we hustled over to take a look.

Alex Lazarov is the best 18-and-under in Bulgaria and he recently passed through Wilmington to visit with family friends and tune up his game en route to this week’s US Open junior tournament in New York. Local teaching pro Joel Irwin put Alex through some paces but from our vantage point it looked like the youngster may have gotten the best of the former collegiate star.

Unfortunately, that match may have been the highlight of Alex’s US Open experience as an injury forced him to withdraw from the tournament. Alex is young and resilient and full of incredible talent and his First State ties ensure we will be following his career closely.

DSC_0804Another interesting Delaware US Open connection is with the tournament’s most-watched player, Serena Williams, the dominant ace in the women’s game who is aiming to capture her first Grand Slam – winning all four major championships in one year. A key member of William’s entourage is Wilmingtonian Grant Firestone, a former Brandywine HS and Haverford College standout in lacrosse. Local tennis fans can occasional catch glimpses of Grant in the courtside box with Serena’s friends and family so keep an eye out.
