10 Free Concerts, Series and Music Events to Enjoy in July

It’s summertime, and the livin’ is indeed easy– especially when folks in greater Wilmington offer a bunch of ways to enjoy lots of free music this July.

From polka to punk, we’ve got you covered. Here are 10 free music concerts, series and events you won’t want to miss (a couple of which are happening today!) this month:


ladybug1. The Ladybug Music Festival

When: 5 to 10 p.m. July 16

Where: Downtown Wilmington at 2nd and Market streets (LOMA). Find shows at Shenanigans, Extreme Pizza, Film Brothers Co-Op, Zaikka, Babe Styling Studio, Studio on Market, LOMA Coffee, Outdoor stages at 3rd and LOMA and Del Tech’s courtyard.

Who: See a variety of female performers and bands. Jenny Leigh and Angela Sheik are the headlining acts, and 31 other artists will play.

cranes2. The 2015 Shipyard Summer Concert Series

When: 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday nights through Aug. 27.

Where: Dravo Plaza on the Wilmington Riverfront. It’s address is on Justison Street and is next to the Shipyard Center.

Who: Tonight, Best Kept Soul (rhythm and blues, gospel, jazz, funk, hip-hop and rock) plays. On July 23 is Elizabeth Knecht (standards, show tunes, Italian opera), and Voodoo Deville (blues, boogie & swing) on July 30. Click here for more details on dates and performances.

When: 6:30 p.m. July 17, 18, 24 and 25

Where: Rodney Square in downtown Wilmington

Who: Laura Cheadle Band and The Tony Williams Band July 17, The G2 Band and The S.O.S. Band July 18, and Best Kept Soul and Eric Roberson July 24 and 25.

The “Rodney Square Summer Stage,” brings great music to downtown Wilmington absolutely free! From up and coming local talent, to your favorites in the music industry. Showcasing various genres of music the stage will be active with live music for three consecutive  weekends in  July.

richardraw4. Richard Raw’s Conversational Piece Jam Session/Open Mic

When: 7 to 10 p.m. July 17

Where: World Cafe Live at the Queen, 500 N. Market St. Reservations accepted.

Who: Musicians who want to join in and jam with Richard Raw (soul/funk/spoken-word/hip-hop extraordinaire).

winterthur5. Pop-Up Beer Gardens at Winterthur

When: 4 to 9 p.m. on Fridays including July 17 and 24. See link above for more dates.

Where: Winterthur Visitors Center Patio, 5105 Kennett Pike

Who: Polkadelphia will play. Craft beers ($6) and Pennsylvania German inspired foods ($4.50-$9) will be available for purchase.

whirledpeas6.  Concerts on the Library Lawn

When: Catch the last one from 6:30 to 8 p.m. July 22.

Where: Brandywine Hundred Library, 1300 Foulk Road. Bring a picnic blanket– but in the event of rain, the concert will be moved inside.

Who: Whirled Peas Band, which will play classic American Roots music (think folk, bluegrass, blues, country).

7. Wilmo Wednesdays

When: 7 p.m. July 22, 29 and Wednesdays beyond

Where: World Cafe Live at the Queen, 500 N. Market St. Reservations accepted.

Who: Gable Music Ventures is presenting a curated variety show featuring music of all genres, stand-up comedy, spoken word and slam poetry, story-telling and other forms of performance art. Interested performers must contact Jeremy Hebbel in advance at jeremy@gablemusicventures.com to register.

8. United on Union Tuned IN Wilmington Block Party

When: 5 to 8 p.m. July 23

Where: Union Street in Wilmington

Who: Still Moon (old school rock, punk, folk, soul and more), Richard Raw (see #4 above), and local comedian Brandon Vincent Jackson.

When: 5 to 9 p.m. July 25 (Concert starts at 7:30 p.m.)

Where: Glasgow Park in Bear

Who: Individuals and dance groups will learn and perform various styles of dancing in celebration of National Dance Day. Then The Strange Heat will perform a family-friendly concert. Bring chairs, water bottles and blankets, and your wallet if you’d like to buy dinner or dessert at one of the many food trucks that will be there.

punk10. Punk Rock Roulette with special performances

When: 8:30 p.m. July 30

Where: World Cafe Live at the Queen, 500 N. Market St. Reservations accepted, and seating is not guaranteed.

Who: Anyone who wants to sing punk classics (karaoke style) with the band, and special guest performances from Goddamnit, The Headies, Satellite Go and Paint the Sun.
