Demolition Party at Legendary Katie's Restaurant

Old friends gathered to take in last look at the legendary Katie’s Restaurant in Little Italy yesterday before the building was razed to make way for six new town homes. The “demolition party” was their chance to say goodbye to the popular eatery and memories that go back to 1936, when Silvio Spiezio first opened Katie’s doors.  Those who remember say Katie Spiezio’s Italian recipes were mouthwateringly terrific. Two of her grandchildren and three of her great grandchildren were at the party, and they were proud to share pictures of Kate and stories about her legendary spaghetti gravy. Although the restaurant has changed hands over the years, the Katie’s name has endured as a Wilmington icon, so much so that Vice President Joe Biden famously claimed to have dined there years after it actually closed. Casale Construction invited neighbors and local officials to the party, which included tasty nibbles by Pastabilities and music by WJBR.
