Wine, Frankly: Ladera Vineyards Tasting Thursday

I got an email last week from Mike Myers of Ladera Vineyards letting me know that he’d be in town this Thursday and wanted to do an impromptu tasting here on North Union Street. “That okay?” he asked. Freakin’ A right it’s okay!

Here’s the lineup of Ladera wines that Mike will be pouring… we’ll have them paired up with each of the 5 new pâté, mousses and terrines along with other cheeses, spreads, charcuterie, flatbreads, crostini and spreads from our DiBruno Bros section!

Ladera is still a family owned winery, increasingly rare in Napa Valley.  Michael Myers is their Eastern regional sales rep and he’s looking forward to pouring and telling you the Ladera story.  Contrary to many wineries in Napa Valley, they take a mostly natural approach in the vineyards and in the winery.  Consequently, Ladera wines show a bit more restraint than many Napa wines.  I’m glad you’ll have the opportunity to taste through their full lineup… it’s gonna be a real treat!

All Ladera wines come from estate vineyards owned by the family.  Their Pinot Noir comes from a vineyard in Sonoma in the Russian River Valley; you wouldn’t expect Pinot Noir from Napa Valley proper. The remainder are all from Napa vineyards owned by the family.  See you Thursday… corks pop at 4pm

Unmistakably Howell Mountain, the 2010 Ladera Howell Mountain Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon reflects its mountain origins. Comprised of the most promising lots of the vintage, the grapes were hand sorted, de-stemmed and cold soaked for 5 days in small open top fermenters to extract maximum fruit characteristics.  Each individual lot was aged separately for 21 months in 100% new French oak and bottled without fining or filtration. 2,000 cases were produced.

The Reserve Cab showcases the best vineyard Ladera has to offer. Rich and decadent, this deep ruby Cabernet displays gorgeous aromas of ripe blackberries and black cherries with notes of fresh mint, cocoa, vanilla and nutmeg. The concentrated and well-structured palate is rich and pure with ripe black fruits, firm yet supple tannins, and a refreshing beam of acidity that carries through to a long and persistent finish.  Stunning wine!

The blocks selected for the 2010 Ladera Stile Blocks Cabernet Sauvignon were hand sorted then de-stemmed to small open top fermenters.  Aged for 20 months in 52% new French oak and bottled without fining or filtration.  872 cases produced.

Carefully selected lots make up this exciting new addition to the Ladera line-up.  Stile Blocks Cab illustrates a unique aspect of Ladera’s vineyard with a sense of place. Deep intense aromas fill the glass with notes of fresh violet, black/blueberry, cocoa and sweet cinnamon spice. The opulent palate is soft and concentrated with ripe black fruits and fine integrated tannins that provide for a long flavorful finish.

The 2011 Ladera Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Vedot and 1% Malbec with each adding to the wine’s complexity. A combination of 32 lots were individually harvested, fermented and aged before the final blend was assembled. Aged in 40% new French oak for 20 months.  1,080 cases were produced.

This Cab possesses aromas of black cherry, crème de cassis, dark chocolate and vanilla with bursts of fresh pine. The layered palate is packed with dark plum and sweet oak spice that linger to a long and pleasing finish.

The juice was cold settled for 24 hours in tank then transferred to Stainless Steel and French Oak barrels (5% new) to undergo fermentation.  It was cold fermented, aged sur lies for 7 months and stirred routinely to create a long, rich and complex palate with striking varietal character.  1,459 cases were bottled.

The 2011 Ladera Sauvignon Blanc expresses refreshing aromas of passion fruit, honeydew melon and spiced pear with underlying notes of lemongrass and citrus zest that add to the wines appeal.

The palate is pure and focused with a lively underlying acidity leading to a long and persistent finish.

The 2011 Pillow Road Pinot Noir displays pure fruit aromas of red cherry, cranberry and wild strawberry with floral notes of lavender and fresh violet. The elegant palate is soft and juicy with flavors of Rainer cherry and sweet vanilla spice. Polished tannins and quenching acidity lead to a long velvety finish. 738 cases produced.
