Exploring Delaware’s Hindu Culture

June 25, 2012 By

Delaware has so many great treasures!

My wife, daughter, and I were recently invited to tour one of the most incredible sites in our state – the Hindu Temple of Delaware, located on Yorklyn Road in Hockessin.

What we discovered on this tour led to an even deeper appreciation for the vibrancy of life in Delaware. For example:

  • While the Hindu Temple is just over a decade old (completed in 2001) – the community responsible for it started meeting in the late 1980′s
  • The Temple is open seven days a week
  • The Temple serves approximately 10,000 people, some travelling from more than 60 miles away to practice their faith and culture at the Temple
  • The beautiful and intricate carvings have all been carved by hand

We owe a significant debt of gratitude to Sakthi Vel, Ph.D. and his family for inviting us to the Temple and treating us as honored guests.

Many thanks also to Pt. Narayana K. Bhattar, high preist for the Temple, for his warm hospitality.

Following an afternoon of great food, conversation, and learning, we left the Temple knowing that in addition to the great architectural treasure, we have truly incredible cultural treasures here in Delaware that circle the globe and extend bonds of friendship that enrich all of us.

Ken Grant has spent most of his life in Delaware, loves being in all three counties, works for the only U.S.-based manufacturer of Thin Layer Chromatography Plates, is married to an incredible woman who is willing to put up with his antics and is the father of two teenagers who have agreed to wait at least another 20 years before writing the books about their “adventurous” childhood.
