The Flags of Summer

Memorial Day may be the official start to the summer season, but for many Wilmingtonians, there are other telltale signs that summer’s bliss has at last arrived.  For TSD, no signal is more welcome than the flags flying in front of Fusco’s water ice stand, the Little Italy landmark on Union Street.  Since 1957 (apparently using the same treasured equipment), Fusco’s has been serving up the most delicious, most perfectly balanced cup of Italian water ice – the likes of which we’ve not encountered elsewhere.  The slushy texture, the chunks of real lemon, the not-too-sweet taste … now that’s summer!

And, please, when you pull over in front of Fusco’s for your fix, don’t act like a rookie and ask for a.) any flavor other than lemon OR  b.) a spoon.  Also, no dawdling: make it a quick pickup so the next guy can pull in behind you.

PS – we like Yatz’s too, but Fusco’s is a single-product, summertime-only operation.
